Furniture does not always have to be discreet, rational or grown-up. At Artipelag, INNER CHILD explores how playfulness, imagination and curiosity can change the way we see design – and the rooms we live in.

A piece of furniture can be functional and still make you smile. An object can be sculptural, surprising or almost impossible to place in a traditional style category.
At Artipelag on Värmdö, that kind of design takes centre stage. INNER CHILD: Playing with Design was created especially for Artipelag by trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort and curator Philip Fimmano. The exhibition brings together work by around a hundred designers and artists across eight thematic chapters.
There are sculptural furniture pieces, handmade objects, textiles and imaginative installations. Contributors include Maarten Baas, Front, Yinka Ilori, Max Lamb, Gustaf Westman and Victoria Yakusha.

It is not only about bold colours and unusual shapes. The exhibition also explores what happens when designers are free to experiment, work intuitively and approach materials with the same curiosity as a child.
The scenography is part of the story too. It was created by Kiki van Eijk and Joost van Bleiswijk together with their children Ko and Puk – turning the family's collaboration into an expression of the exhibition's theme.

For anyone interested in interiors, INNER CHILD raises a question worth taking home: does every object have to fit a carefully considered style, or can a room also hold something playful, unexpected and personal?
Because the exhibition shows a more imaginative side of contemporary furniture design and inspires more personal rooms.
